Off-the-track racehorses are unlikely to need the levels of high starch feed typically fed at the track, however, they do still need quite a considerable amount of additional calories to maintain their condition and not fall apart.
“Fit racehorses have very high lean muscle mass and therefore higher metabolic rates even when not working. This increases their daily caloric need above a similar sized horse at maintenance but that has a lower lean muscle mass.”
