Safeguard EQ®

HYGAIN® Safeguard EQ®

Broad-spectrum Mycotoxin Binder

A pelleted broad-spectrum mycotoxin binder formulated for all equines, which may assist in the quick and effective absorption of mycotoxins, minimizing associated negative health and performance problems.

Wheat bran, wheat germ, organic mineral compounds and yeast extracts

HYGAIN® SAFEGUARD EQ® can be added directly to your horse’s feed.

HYGAIN® SAFEGUARD EQ® should be fed at a rate of 30g per day (one level scoop) based on a 500kg horse.

Certain fungi found on fresh pasture grasses, conserved roughage (hay, chaff, straw) and in grains can produce secondary compounds called mycotoxins. Several types of mycotoxins exist which may interact, especially under favourable environmental conditions, such as in warm and humid climates (as well as in improperly stored feeds). Mycotoxins may contaminate feeds or grains and are hard to detect due to their odourless, tasteless and invisible presence.

The horse’s digestive system is sensitive to the effects of mycotoxins, as the gastric juices in the stomach cannot effectively deactivate the mycotoxins and these therefore enter the sensitive small intestine and hindgut. Once mycotoxins reach the hindgut they may affect the intestinal wall or enter the horse’s blood stream, which can result in respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological and reproductive issues.

Even though symptoms are usually non-specific, associated clinical signs with the existence of mycotoxins in horse’s diet include:

  • Poor condition (weight loss)
  • Reduced performance
  • Lethargy
  • Depression
  • Suppressed appetite
  • Lameness
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Gastrointestinal diseases (e.g. colic)
  • Reproductive failures
  • Neurological disorders (e.g. neurotoxicity, Fatal leucoencephalomalacia, ataxia)
  • Immunosuppression
  • Death
  • Atypical myopathy (muscle disease)

Testing for mycotoxins is expensive and eliminating them from your horse’s diet is challenging, however, it is advised that any roughage or feed is thoroughly inspected for signs of mould to avoid possible contamination. Due to the difficulty to predict the occurrence of mycotoxins in your horse’s diet, it is advised to add a broad-spectrum mycotoxin binder to your horse’s diet, which simply binds the mycotoxins and passes them through the digestive tract, exiting with the manure.

My TB mare started showing signs of lethargy, was off her dinner, which was very unlike her as she never left a pellet in the feed bin and then a couple of days later all four legs started to swell from the cannon bone down to the fetlock. Before I called the vet and started all sorts of tests I decided to try Hygain Safeguard and within 2 days her appetite was back, the swelling went down and she is now back to normal. An amazing product and I highly recommend it for people whose horses are showing similar symptoms.

Jaz has always been a problem child. He was nasty, very aggressive (rear, bite, charge), arrogant, agitated, sensitive (pigroot, girthy) and super emotional. He was diagnosed with Gastric Ulcers, and after trying multiple treatments, nothing would keep them away. I spent $1000’s!
It got to the stage, where I couldn’t ride him due to how sensitive and angry he was, I even contemplated moving him on to someone else.
I finally got him to a stage using a Kelato product, where he was comfortable enough to deal with life. But not long after using the supplement, he went backwards, lost a lot of weight and became his old self.
At Farmworld in Lardner park this year, I spoke to Annette Ward in your Hygain tent. She told me to try Safeguard. All I can say is THANKYOU!!! She is my hero, and saviour in suggesting this.
My horse is completely different now. I noticed changes on day 3 of the Safeguard pellet! He put on weight, his coat is immaculate. But best of all he is happy and the healthiest I have ever been able to get him. People have said at competitions how much he has changed, and I give them a lecture about Safeguard and how they should try it with their horses!
Your product has saved my horse from a life of misery and pain. I am forever grateful for that!

Thank you SO MUCH for your rewards club – it allowed me to redeem my tokens and try this product for no other reason than to try out another wonderful product from your range.
My horse always without fail would nip or try to whenever I groomed or girthed him up, no matter how gentle or slow I went so I always suspected something was amiss but was told it was just a bad habit he picked up from his racing days.
I noticed a change in his mood after day 5 of adding Safeguard – I can do anything with him without having to watch my back. Another bonus for my picky eater is they are palatable to him.
His manure is better and he appears to be feeling much more comfortable within himself, the product has certainly worked its magic for my horse but most important improved his quality of life, so thank you once again.
